Further Discworld Stuff: Nerdery & Philately

Discworld Convention: Discworld Stamps & Coins
Discworld Stamps and Coins

I'm not sure if you all know this, but I'm outing myself: I'm a closet coin collector and philatelist. Judge me if you will!

I've been casually collecting coins and stamps for 20+ years. My collections are entirely based on stumbling upon things that strike my fancy. This means the stamp collection runs high in astronauts, while the coin collection includes several tokens from a game room. Obviously, not in this for the re-sale value.

The Discworld stamps are so well-designed! And perforated and gummed! Terry and Bernard Pearson designed them for Going Postal. They're now part of the Philatelic Department of the British Library, a division of the British Museum.
(They said it had nothing to do with the head of the department being a huge Discworld fan.)

There's probably no accurate analogy I could make for meeting someone I've been a fan of since junior high. Terry Pratchett is very amiable and approachable and hilarious, but still I managed to mostly mumble at him and tell him "Thank you!" several times.

Still, pretty great - I'm so glad I went. Shew. Back to normal crafting now!

Discworld Convention! (NADwCon)

Discworld Con Friday: Michelle & IMichelle and I at the North American Discworld Convention over the Weekend!

While Will was at Dragon*Con, I was in Phoenix, reveling in a similar but more focused type of nerdery: Pratchettian! Thanks to my fellow Discworld fan friend Michelle (pictured here, adorably)! I got to crash on her and Eric's hotel couch and not have to skip the con due to being frugal (cheap).

Quick definition of the Discworld (in case you're friends with me and somehow don't know):
The Discworld is a fantasy book series by Sir Terry Pratchett, as well as the physical fictional setting for the series.

There's the Omega Pin that I finished right before the con! I think it looks pretty good (especially because no one gets too close to it, what with Susan being Death and all). Here's one of my favorite costumes at the con - the milkman from Thief of Time (who also has an alternate name and occupation that I won't mention because spoiler). Just read the book! Geez!

The best thing about a focused convention is the crowd is imbued with more congeniality than the usual convention crowd. Usually, attendees can find a track or panels that dovetail with their interests, but with this, you know everyone there is definitely into Terry Pratchett's work.

I'm not saying that there isn't a amiable buzz among pretty much every convention I go to, it's just that you usually have to spend some time finding "your crowd" (whether it be BSG fans, cosplayers, Japanamaniacs, etc.) and here they're just all handed to you).

I'm going to have to post some more stuff tomorrow, because there's more! I bought things! Woo!

More Costuming: Omega Pin

Omega Pin
Omega Pin Beginnings

This month is definitely heavy on costuming - with DragonCon coming up for some people, and the North American Discworld Convention coming up for me, costume construction is on the rise!

While working on the Ambush Bug mask, I am also working on a project for me! I'm going to re-visit my Susan Sto Helit costume -

I probably won't be able to bring the scythe on the plane (boo) but I will update the pin for my cape by making Death's omega pin out of cardboard. The technique is based on Katie's windup key tutorial which I'm finding very handy!

Anyway, cool info coming Wednesday, and hopefully some progress between now and then!
